How to Prepare Your Toddler for a Newborn Photography Session | Vancouver Lifestyle Newborn Photographer
One of the biggest questions we hear from growing families is:
"What if my toddler doesn't cooperate?"
If you're welcoming your second (or third!) baby, chances are your oldest child isn't quite as excited about sitting still for photos as you are. The good news? They don't have to be.
At Vancouver Newborn Photographers, we specialize in relaxed, in-home lifestyle newborn photography, and we've photographed hundreds of families with toddlers. We've learned that the best sibling photos almost never come from asking a two-year-old to smile perfectly at the camera - they come from giving them space to simply be themselves.
Let Them Know What to Expect
A few days before your session, casually tell your child that a photographer is coming over to take pictures of your new baby - and that they'll get to be in some photos too.
Keep it simple and exciting.
Instead of saying:
"You need to smile nicely."
Try saying:
"We're going to play together, cuddle the baby, and have some fun while someone takes pictures."
Removing pressure makes a huge difference.
Don't Worry if They're Shy
Many toddlers take a little while to warm up.
That's completely normal.
Some children run around the house for the first 20 minutes. Others hide behind Mom's legs. Some would rather show us every toy they own before they even acknowledge the camera.
We embrace all of it.
Those little personalities often become some of our favourite photographs.
Avoid Bribes (If You Can)
It can be tempting to promise ice cream if they smile.
Ironically, this often has the opposite effect.
Children become focused on earning the reward instead of simply interacting with their family.
Instead, let them take breaks, play naturally, and celebrate small moments.
Schedule Around Their Best Time of Day
Whenever possible, we recommend scheduling your session when your toddler is typically happiest.
Avoid times that overlap with naps or meals.
A well-rested, well-fed toddler is far more likely to enjoy the experience.
Don't Stress About Your Home
Parents often apologize before we even arrive.
"The toys are everywhere."
"The house isn't perfect."
"The playroom exploded."
Please don't worry.
Real family homes tell your story.
We only need a few rooms with good natural light, and we'll happily help move a basket, blanket, or toy if needed.
Let Siblings Take the Lead
Some of the sweetest moments happen when toddlers feel like they're helping.
They might:
Kiss baby's forehead
Hold a tiny hand
Count baby's fingers
Peek into the bassinet
Snuggle beside Mom on the bed
We never force these interactions.
Instead, we gently guide and wait for genuine connection.
Those authentic moments are what families treasure years later.
It's Okay if Everything Doesn't Go According to Plan
Babies cry.
Toddlers get distracted.
Parents sometimes feel overwhelmed.
That's real life.
Lifestyle newborn photography isn't about creating perfection - it's about preserving this season exactly as it feels.
Years from now, you'll remember the way your toddler proudly wrapped an arm around their new sibling far more than whether they looked at the camera for every photo.
Why In-Home Sessions Work So Well for Young Children
Home is where toddlers feel safest.
They have familiar toys, favourite snacks, and plenty of room to move around.
Without the pressure of a studio environment, children often settle naturally into the session, making photographs feel genuine and relaxed.
Our approach is calm, baby-led, and child-friendly, giving everyone time to breathe and enjoy the experience.
