The Perfect Time to Capture Your Newborn
One of the most common questions we’re asked is: When should we schedule our newborn photos?
If you’re considering lifestyle in-home newborn photography in Vancouver, the short answer is - earlier than you think, but later than you’d expect.
Unlike traditional posed studio sessions that often take place within the first 5–10 days, lifestyle newborn photography offers a bit more flexibility - and that’s part of its beauty.
The Sweet Spot: 7–21 Days Old
For most families, the ideal time for an in-home newborn session is between one and three weeks after birth.
During this window:
Babies are still wonderfully sleepy and curly.
Feeding routines are beginning to settle.
Parents are starting to find their rhythm.
You’re home - in your own space - adjusting to life together.
Lifestyle sessions aren’t about perfectly posed babies. They’re about connection. Snuggling on your bed. Rocking near the nursery window. Big siblings peeking in with curiosity. Those early days unfold naturally - and that’s exactly what we document.
What If My Baby Is Older?
Beautiful images don’t expire after two weeks.
Because lifestyle newborn photography focuses on storytelling and connection rather than intricate posing, sessions can still be perfect at:
4 weeks
6 weeks
Even 2–3 months
Older newborns often make more eye contact, stretch more, and show the beginnings of personality which can add another layer of meaning to your photos.
When Should I Book?
If you’re expecting, we recommend booking your session during your second trimester. We schedule you based on your due date and adjust once baby arrives. About one week before your due date, we check in.
If baby hasn’t arrived yet, we simply move your tentative session date back by one week. If your little one decides to come early, we adjust forward to make sure we capture those first beautiful days at home.
It’s a flexible system designed around real life - because babies don’t follow calendars.
Our goal is to make the process feel calm and seamless, so once your baby arrives, you can focus on settling in while we take care of the timing.
Why Timing Matters (But Not in the Way You Think)
The truth? There is no “perfect” baby behavior required.
Your home doesn’t need to be spotless. Your baby doesn’t need to sleep the entire time. Your toddler doesn’t need to cooperate perfectly.
Lifestyle in-home newborn photography is about preserving how this season felt - the softness, the quiet, the adjustment, the love. And that story exists whether it’s day 8 or week 8.
If you’re planning a newborn session in Vancouver and wondering about timing, we’d love to guide you through the process and create something timeless, relaxed, and deeply personal.
Because while these early days are fleeting, the photographs become part of your family’s story forever.
