From Maternity to Newborn: The Bump-to-Baby Experience | Tasha
The house may look exactly the same, but somehow everything has changed. There are tiny clothes where there weren't tiny clothes before, bottles on the counter, a bassinet nearby - and suddenly the person you've been waiting months to meet is sleeping in the next room.
That is where we found this family for their newborn session: at home, in those early days when everything still feels brand new.
A Newborn Session That Feels Like Them
One of our favourite things about photographing newborns at home is that we don't have to manufacture the setting.
The home becomes part of the story.
The familiar rooms, the morning light, the places where you will eventually have hundreds of ordinary family moments - they are the backdrop to these extraordinary first days.
And newborns don't need much. A warm blanket, a parent's arms, a sleepy little face and all those impossibly small details are enough.
This little one was especially sweet to photograph. From the curled-up hands to those fleeting newborn expressions, there are so many details that disappear surprisingly quickly. Babies change almost daily in the beginning. Their faces fill out, their movements become less curled, and eventually those tiny hands that once disappeared inside yours are reaching for everything.
That's what makes photographing this stage so worthwhile.
Not because every image needs to be perfect, but because this version of your baby only exists for a very short time.
From Bump to Baby
This session was also the second chapter for one of our Bump-to-Baby clients.
We love when we get to photograph a family twice within such a short period of time. At maternity, you're photographing anticipation — the excitement, the wondering, the waiting for that little person you haven't met yet.
Then suddenly, there they are.
The Bump-to-Baby package is designed for families who want to preserve both sides of that story, while also offering a better overall value than booking the sessions independently.
But the value isn't only financial.
There is something particularly meaningful about having photographs from both stages that belong together. The same family, the same visual style, and then this tiny new person who was once only a bump in the photographs from a few weeks earlier.
Put the galleries side by side and you can see the transition: expecting your baby, and then holding them.
It's a small piece of your family's history that would otherwise be surprisingly easy to forget.
The Photographs You Don't Know You'll Miss Yet
When you're in the middle of the newborn stage, it can be hard to imagine missing the exhaustion.
But one day, you will.
You'll miss the way your baby fit against your chest. You'll miss the sleepy little noises. You'll miss carrying them from room to room because they wouldn't settle anywhere else. You'll miss how small they looked in your arms.
And you'll probably miss some of the things you didn't think you'd ever miss at all.
That's why I think the best newborn photographs aren't necessarily about creating a picture-perfect version of this season. They're about giving you a way back into it.
Years from now, these images won't just show you what your baby looked like.
They'll remind you what it felt like to have them home.
