Do Newborn Photos Need to Be Taken in the First Two Weeks? | Vancouver Newborn Photographers

There is a lot of advice surrounding newborn photography: book early, photograph your baby within the first two weeks, and don't miss the “newborn window.”

But the truth is, there isn't one perfect age for newborn photos.

The first two weeks can be ideal for families who love very sleepy, curled-up images. But if you prefer natural, relaxed photographs that capture your baby as they really are, you have much more flexibility.

Your Baby Doesn't Have to Be Sleepy

Some of our favourite newborn photographs happen when babies are wide awake.

Those curious eyes. Tiny expressions. A little yawn. The way they look up at Mom or study Dad's face.

As babies get a little older, they often become more alert and expressive - and those moments are just as beautiful to document.

What If Your Baby Is Already a Few Weeks Old?

You haven't missed your chance.

A three-week-old or even one-month-old baby can still be beautifully photographed, especially during an in-home lifestyle session.

Your baby may be more awake. You may have started to discover their personality. An older sibling may be settling into their new role. And you may already know exactly how your baby likes to be held.

Those are meaningful parts of your story, too.

There Is No Perfect Baby for a Photo Session

Your baby may cry, need to feed, refuse to sleep or want to be held the entire time.

That's okay.

Our in-home newborn sessions are baby-led, which means we can pause, cuddle, feed and settle whenever needed. We're not trying to make your baby fit a particular pose or schedule.

We're photographing your baby as they are.

So, When Should You Book?

If you love traditional posed newborn photography, the first couple of weeks may be ideal.

If you prefer natural photographs focused on connection, personality and everyday life at home, you have much more flexibility.

And if your baby has already arrived and you're wondering if you've waited too long?

You haven't.

Your baby doesn't suddenly stop being worth photographing after two weeks.

There is no magic deadline for remembering these first days.
